Our solutions to combat male pattern baldness
Are you worried about your hair loss and the mirror is reflecting back to you the image of your receding forehead and temples? While some men choose to shave their entire heads and take full responsibility for their new look, others are less comfortable with hair loss. There are solutions to combat male pattern baldness and restore a fuller, healthier head of hair. The doctors at Clinique du Lac are at your disposal to discuss the best solution for your type and stage of baldness.

What causes male pattern baldness?
Baldness in men is also known as androgenetic alopecia, because it is caused by an excess of male hormones, androgens. It is defined by progressive hair loss, and generally begins between the ages of 20 and 35 with balding on the forehead, upper temples or crown of the head.
In France, baldness affects two out of three men around the age of 40.
As with women, other causes can also play a part in hair loss: certain medications, a vitamin-deficient diet, stress or even overly aggressive hair care products can accelerate baldness.
What are the solutions for baldness?
Depending on the origin and stage of your baldness, there are cosmetic medicine treatments and techniques such as mesotherapy or PRP scalp injections to help you regain a healthy, vigorous head of hair. For alopecia in an intermediate stage or already well established, hair transplantation is the best treatment.
PRP hair
To treat incipient baldness, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections can be used to stimulate the hair follicle. The treatment can also be carried out after a hair transplant for better grip and faster regrowth.
- Method: a small quantity of blood is drawn and centrifuged to separate plasma and platelets from other blood components. The platelet-rich plasma is then reinjected into the scalp using a fine needle.
- After-effects: some redness or bruising may appear in the injection area, but these disappear rapidly.
- The result: thicker, shinier, silkier hair. After just a few sessions, hair loss is slowed.
FUE hair transplant
In the case of androgenetic baldness, hair gradually falls out and eventually stops growing back. The solution is to remove grafts without visible scarring and re-implant them on balding areas, using the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant technique.
- Method: Hair implant surgery is performed under local anaesthetic on an outpatient basis. The procedure is very meticulous, as the grafts are harvested one by one using a punch, a very fine instrument connected to a robot. The harvested follicular units contain 1 to 4 hairs, and are then re-implanted in the areas to be treated.
- Aftercare: FUE hair micrografting may cause slight pain and swelling of the forehead, which quickly subsides. Tiny lesions on the donor area heal in less than 2 days, and small crusts on the recipient area fall off after around ten days.
- Result: the result is very natural, with no visible scarring. Hair grows back in full health from the third month, and the result is considered definitive after one year.
