Forehead and brow lift

What is the frontotemporal lift?

As we age, wrinkles naturally appear on the face, particularly on the forehead and eyebrows. These disfigurements can be corrected with a forehead aesthetic surgery procedure known as a frontotemporal lift. Clinique du Lac explains everything you need to know about this common procedure, performed on men and women from the age of 40.

What is the frontotemporal lift?

Among the various facelift procedures available is the frontotemporal facelift. This is one of the most comprehensive cosmetic surgery procedures, as it corrects both forehead and temporal wrinkles. The frontotemporal facelift comprises two separate procedures, performed at the same time for optimum results.

Forehead lift

This procedure requires a forehead lift, which also involves a brow lift. This involves correcting the small folds of skin on the forehead, as well as the wrinkles around the glabella (the space between the eyebrows), known colloquially as frown lines.

Temporal facelift

Next, a targeted temporal lift is performed on the tail of the eyebrow, which is at the level of the fall of the lateral end of the eyebrow, as well as on the crow's feet at the corner of the eye.

Frontotemporal facelift: practical information

Forehead and eyebrow wrinkles can also be corrected with an injection of botulinum toxin. However, unlike surgery, which corrects wrinkles once and for all, botulinum toxin injections provide only temporary corrections, lasting between three and six months.

After surgery, it's important to remember that facial aging continues. That's why, to combat the appearance of new forehead and eyebrow wrinkles, other treatments can be put in place.

Finally, this procedure only includes a forehead lift and an eyebrow lift. To act on other parts of the face, it is necessary to consider other procedures: blepharoplasty for the upper eyelids, cervico-facial lift for the neck and cheeks... Ask your La Clinique du Lac plastic surgeon for advice.

Forehead and brow lift: objectives and principles

A frontotemporal facelift is not intended to change facial features. The aim of the procedure is simply to restore the face to the way it looked a few years ago. To achieve this, the disfigurements of the upper part of the face are corrected:

  • A sagging forehead that creates horizontal facial wrinkles
  • Excess skin on the upper eyelids caused by sagging eyebrows
  • Wrinkles between the eyebrows (frown lines)
  • Wrinkles in the corners of the eyes

This procedure is mostly performed endoscopically. This means that a mini-camera is inserted into the patient's body, with the aim of following the operation from the inside via a screen and performing precise gestures. This technique has the advantage of greatly reducing the extent of surgical trauma, as well as the size of scars.

Temporal lift: before the procedure

Before the operation, the specialists at Clinique du Lac take the time to listen to you to make sure that the procedure is right for you. They take a close look at your entire face to guide you towards the best treatment. Finally, they explain the procedure and take the time to answer any questions you may have.

Patients are advised to stop smoking one month before and after the operation, to limit the risk of delayed healing. Similarly, it is strictly forbidden to take aspirin for up to ten days after the operation, to avoid the risk of blood not clotting.

This forehead surgery procedure is performed in the operating room, under general or local anesthesia. If the frontotemporal lift is the only planned procedure, it can be performed on an outpatient basis, and the patient can be discharged the same day as the operation.

While each surgeon adopts his or her own technique to suit each case, there are some basic principles that can be broken down into several stages:

  • Skin incisions: three to five 5-10 mm incisions are made in the scalp. One of these incisions is used to insert the endoscope, while the others are used to insert the surgical instruments.
  • Detachment: the forehead and temples are completely detached, right down to the superciliary arches.
  • Muscular weakening: the muscles responsible for wrinkles are weakened.
  • Re-draping: the detached tissues are re-tensioned with the help of deep fasteners.
  • Suturing: closing the small incisions

The duration of this type of intervention varies according to the importance of the corrections to be made, but generally does not exceed 90 minutes.

For a frontotemporal facelift, the price varies from case to case. As every patient is different, Clinique du Lac's aesthetic surgeons draw up a personalized estimate for each one, starting at €3,500. The price may therefore vary according to the complexity and extent of the corrections required.
